Dargaville students down pens, raise hammers to build houses

Students at Dargaville High School are swapping the classroom for a construction site to build desperately-needed public houses for the North. The school is churning out beautifully made homes for the rohe, and the students making them have been bitten by the building bug. Our cameraman Nick Monro and reporter Nita Blake-Persen went to check out their mahi.

Sleeps With Monsters: Saffron, Robots, and Space Assassins

A few days ago, I looked at the calendar and said, “But what do you mean, it’s more than halfway through May?” My sense of time passing remains disconnected from reality, in a faintly comedic way that makes the day of the week a constant startlement. Truly startling and not at all comedic, though, was the news that Lois McMaster Bujold has published a full-length novel in her “Penric and Desdemona” series. Liz Bourke Reviews The Alien Stars and Other Novellas by Tim Pratt

Tim Pratt’s Axiom trilogy ( The Wrong Stars, The Dreaming Stars, and The Forbidden Stars) is a trio of excellent, modern, space-opera pulp adventures, with a compelling cast and a satisfying amount of solving problems by blowing them up. I’m gutted that there don’t seem to be any plans for more novel-length works in this setting – and at the same time delighted by the novellas collected in The Alien Stars and Other Novellas, which form a coda of sorts to the trilogy. The Alien Star...
