Not even the sea is safe from the glare of humans’ light at night. Researchers published the first global atlas of ocean light pollution. It shows large chunks of the sea lit up at night. And that risks confusing or disrupting the behaviors of sea life.

As coastal development continues to grow, research begins to reveal the depth of our light pollution problem

As coastal development continues to grow, a new atlas of artificial light at night reveals how light pollution affects our marine ecosystems

Researchers from the University of Plymouth have revealed the extent of the impact that energy-efficient broad spectrum lighting has on the conspicuousness of prey.

For species that forage and feed in the dark, broad spectrum lighting can interfere with the camouflage they rely on for survival.

Species that rely on darkness to forage and feed are losing the gift of camouflage thanks to advances in the lighting used to illuminate the world's cities and coastlines, a study has shown.

Offshore development and coastal city lights negatively impact many marine species

Coastal cities and offshore development create enough light to potentially alter behavior of tiny organisms dozens of meters below the surface.

Ecologists and biologists have long recognized that artificial light at night can have adverse effects on the health of humans and terrestrial wildlife, including disrupted sleep patterns, feeding schedules, and reproductive cycles.
