NEW YORK (AP) — Günther Groissböck was about to walk onstage at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre for the first act of a new “Lohengrin” production last winter when his wife, Isabel, texted that she and their 12-year-old daughter were about to take off on a flight home to Milan.

This ambitious adaptation of Akram Khan’s ballet of the same name is vigorously choreographed, but its messages and meanings struggle to make themselves heard amid the swirling limbs.

François Girard’s staging, originally a co-production with the Bolshoi Theater, arrives a year after its Moscow premiere, which coincided with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
