Russia, China, India and the United States have tested antisatellite missiles and several major world powers have developed technology meant to disrupt signals in space. One Chinese satellite has a robotic arm that could destroy or move other satellites.

The United States and China are locked in a new race, in space and on Earth, over a fundamental resource:

Global positioning satellites serve as clocks in the sky, and their signals have become fundamental to the global economy. Unlike China, the United States does not have a Plan B for civilians should those signals get knocked out.

Incidents of GPS spoofing leading aircraft off-course in the Middle East now have company in Europe. Russia is the source.

Martin Herem, the commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, told Bloomberg Russia was responsible for jamming GPS signals over the Baltic.

"The French Ministry of Armed Forces will benefit from technological breakthroughs and innovations in the fields of robotics, drones and artificial intelligence, in order to evaluate a new naval capability," said French manufacturer Naval Group.

In modern warfare, where signal jamming is now as common as bullets and bombs, the ability to navigate without the guiding stars of GPS has become a critical survival skill for today’s soldier.
