While most evidence supports this, there are relatively few studies that have examined disease processes and their relationship with fitness. Dr. Timo Lakka and co-workers from the Kuopio Research Institute of Exercise Medicine, in Finland, studied a sample of 854 men aged 42 to 60 during a four-year period. People with better aerobic capacities had healthier blood vessels and less evidence of disease. People with the lowest fitness levels had the greatest progression of heart disease during the four-year experiment. The researchers concluded that good cardiorespiratory fitness slows the development of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) in middle-aged men. Fitness
