I thought I knew Waiheke Island. I was wrong.
In one 48-hour visit, I ventured 70m underground to the heart of Auckland s World War II defence effort - listening to a piano recital halfway down - zipped through the air faster than you re allowed to drive on the island, and star gazed with a group working hard to have Waiheke recognised for its dark skies.

The historic World War II tunnels at the Stony Batter Historic Reserve on Waiheke Island have reopened for tours.
Fort Stony Batter Heritage Park project director and Waiheke resident Timothy Moon says the installation is an important part of New Zealand s history.
Stony Batter was the largest of three gun fortresses built in New Zealand following the 1941 attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbour. The other two in Whangaparoa and Wellington.
A Korean supermarket in Kearny Mesa and its former general manager pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court Monday to misdemeanor charges of knowingly hiring undocumented immigrants who were not authorized to work in the United States.
The employment practice at the Zion Market in San Diego went back to as early as 2003, according to the plea agreement, and lasted 16 years.
After accepting the guilty plea Monday, U.S. Magistrate Michael Berg ordered the business to pay a $500,000 fine plus a special assessment penalty of more than $25,000. The former manager, Timothy Moon, was ordered to pay a fine and penalty totaling $10,000.
