GUWAHATI: Flash floods in most parts of the city on Sunday night irked voters in the four constituencies here, which go to the polls on Tuesday in the third and final phase. The advent of the rainy season is dreaded here because of the frequent occurrence of flash floods, which leave large areas inundated disrupting regular activities.
Most residents blamed the civic body, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), for failing to tackle the flash floods that have been plaguing the city for decades.
“The GMC did not undertake any de-siltation or dredging of channels and drains this year and the rains have arrived. Does it mean the situation will worsen this year?” asked Soneswar Kalita, a resident of Geetanagar area in the 53 No Gauhati East Constituency.

GUWAHATI: On the last day of campaign for the final phase of the election, Assamese singer Arupjyoti Baruah, an ardent follower of warrior artist Bishnu Prasad Rava, one of the doyens of Assamese culture and gana shilpi (people’s artist) Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, on Sunday released a song, ‘Bicharor xekh rati (last night of judgment)’, with which he appealed to the people to judge, consider and elect honest and efficient representatives to the assembly to establish a healthier democracy for a good and secure future.
Baruah, who hails from Pathsala, Bajali district in lower Assam, has a music band called ‘Cultivators’ and has been working on the ideologies of Rava, Agarwala and legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika for building a better society.

GUWAHATI: As per the Centre’s instruction to states, the Assam health and family welfare department on Monday wrote to districts to discontinue new registration of healthcare workers (HCW) and front line workers (FLW) for Covid-19 vaccination, after as they received ample chance to get inoculated since January.
However, those registered already, will get vaccinated, immunization spokesperson and director of health services (family welfare), Assam, Munindra Nath Ngatey, said.
According to health sources, a considerable number of anganwadi workers (frontline workers) have been left out of the vaccination drive, as daily Covid cases on Sunday touched 69, highest in the last several weeks. Two more Covid-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. “Those HCWs and front line workers who could not register, will be able to take the vaccine when the inoculation drive begins at the community level. But those aged 45+ can get the jab anytime,” Ngatey sai

GUWAHATI: Congress ended its election campaign in Guwahati East constituency the only fully urban constituency in the state with promises to ensure access to household drinking water and land pattas to all, if voted to power.
Congress candidate Ashima Bordoloi, the granddaughter of the state’s first chief minister Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, said she is committed to solve the perennial problems of the prestigious constituency, including access to household potable water and land pattas.
Targeting sitting BJP MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, against whom she is fighting the elections, for “not giving a heed to problems of the constituency, she questioned why Bhattacharya, being a Guwahati Development Department minister, failed to address the drinking water crisis.
