Hemali Boghawala Surat: Hemali Boghawala, a three-time coprorator from ward 11 was named as 35th mayor of Surat city during the general board meeting of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) held at Sanjeev Kumar Auditorium on Friday. Boghawala, who has been in BJP for the past two decades, had been director of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) in the past and is active in public life. A graduate in English literature, 46-year-old Boghawala belongs to the Surti Modh Vanik community. Dinesh Jodhani, a Leuva Patel from Saurashtra was declared deputy mayor, while Paresh Patel, a businessman and former president of Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) was named as chairman of SMC’s standing committee. Patel is close confident of state BJP chief C R Paatil. Besides these key posts, BJP named Vinod Patel was Whip for the ruling party and Amit Singh Rajput, who represents North Indian communities, as leader of the ruling party in the civic body.

Picture used for representational purpose only SURAT: As Covid-19 cases continued to surface among school students, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Thursday warned that it would shut all those educational institutes including schools, colleges and coaching classes where more than five positive patients are detected. Also, a particular classroom will also be shut if one positive case is found. On Thursday, 12 more students were among the 171 new Covid-19 cases detected in the city with some of them having a travel history to Maharashtra. As many as 1,663 school students, teachers and other staff members were tested in 25 schools and colleges. Out of these, 12 students tested positive. These include two students from the central zone, four from Athwa and six students from Limbayat zone, an SMC official said.

Surat: City-based Taal Group in association with the Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR-Gujarat), International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), along with Charu Castle Foundation, will organise a three-day virtual international music and dance festival from March 12. The festival will be inaugurated by state BJP president and Navsari MP, C R Paatil. “Music, dance and folk dance festival will be held virtually and will be broadcast on www.facebook.com/ICCRGUJARAT and www.facebook.com/taalgroupsurat. Artists from eight countries will showcase their music, dance and folk dance. There are more than 30 groups participating in it,” said Krutika Shah of Taal group.

Surat: More students and teachers continued to get infected with coronavirus infection in the city on Wednesday as the number of cases surged to another high of 161. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials said of the total 2,746 Covid-19 tests conducted in 50 schools and colleges in different civic zones of the city, four students and a teacher tested positive. More cases are surfacing from educational institutions and those returning to the city from outside and other states. The educational institutions from where students and a teacher were found Covid-19 positive were VT Choksi Sarvajanik High School (Haripura), Dr Vikram Sarabhai School (Haribaug), Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and SV Public School (Dumbhal).
