The Las Vegas-based Golden Knights had the most wins in the NHLs truncated 56-game schedule with 40. They shared the most points with Colorado at 82, losing a tie-breaker for the No. 1 seed in the West. This matters not. The Golden Knights are in trouble. They not only have lost all momentum in their opening series; the Knights will be fighting against the Minnesota Wilds unprecedented history in Game 7s on Friday night in T-Mobile Arena. The crowd will be more than 12,000, the Vegas pregame hi...

Article content It’s not easy to choose a Most Embarrassing Week for the National Hockey League. I mean, this is the league that invited Nickelback to sing at its awards show. But the Tom Wilson attacks on Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin, followed by the laughable $5,000 fine levied to Wilson, followed by a statement from the Rangers critical of the Department of Player Safety, followed by a serious $250,000 fine to the Rangers for telling the truth, followed by the firing of Rangers pres...

While the Blue Jackets and Red Wings are battling for draft position and lottery odds instead of a playoff spot -- with last nights win, Detroit moved one point ahead of Columbus at the bottom of the Central Division -- CBJ head coach John Tortorella has too much respect for the game to put that battle ahead of the one the teams will have on the ice to finish the season tonight. It all ends this weekend. The 56-game season comes to a close with a back-to-back, as Columbus and Detroit will play tonight and Saturday to finish things off. Sure, the front office brass has taken the chance to see some new faces in new situations down the st...

(1:21) Emily Kaplan breaks down how Tom Wilson avoided suspension after his altercation with the Rangers on Monday. (1:21) Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson is eventually going to do something to an opponent that will result in him missing 40 games. Maybe 60 games. Maybe an entire season. But the NHL department of player safety is not the NHL department of pre-crime. ...

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports There was hope, optimism and excitement for the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres when they entered the league back in 1970. 51 years later, it’s impossible to call these franchises anything but cursed. No two teams that have yet to win a Stanley Cup have a longer drought than both the Canucks and Sabres. Not only will either team fail to win a Cup in their 51st season, but there’s a decent chance that neither of them even make the playoffs. That should...

Score one for the players. Since July 1, NHL free agents continue to sign on the dotted line for massive amounts of dollars. To this end, Canuck fans must be thrilled with the recent additions of forward Ryan Johnson (two-year, $2.3 million contract), and the ever dangerous Darcy Hordichuk (two-year deal). Oh yes, let’s not forget the brilliant acquisition of ex-Leaf, Kyle Wellwood (one year contract worth just under $1 million), who should fit right in to a team on the decline. But let’s...
