Longtime Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa has passed away. He was 88. Born in Japanese-occupied China in 1935, Ozawa graduated from Tokyos Toho School of Music, having switched to conducting after a rugby injury threatened his studies in piano. He later studied under Herbert von Karajan, and Leonard Bernstein appointed him assistant conductor the New York Philharmonic in 1961. The unconventional maestro who led the Boston Symphony Orchestra longer than any other music director has died of heart failure at the age of 88.

Seiji Ozawa, who has died aged 88, was one of the few Japanese musicians to make a significant mark in the Western classical music tradition. He crossed the East-West divide with remarkable ease, creating some mesmerising music during a tenure of almost three decades with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Sridhar Vembu was born in 1968 in Tamil Nadus Thanjavur. He completed his engineering from IIT Madras in 1989.
