Miyazaki's movies have often been huge hits in Japan and Asia, but they've traditionally made less of a mark in North America.

The film, which is playing in both subtitled and dubbed versions, is also the first fully foreign film to land atop the domestic box office this year.

Hayao Miyazaki won the box office this weekend as his The Boy And The Heron took the #1 spot.
