The chair of Ngāti Maniapoto Māori Trust Board says the tribe’s historic claims settlement is a chance to reset its relationship with the crown.
The deed of settlement will be initialled in parliament tomorrow, three years after the Agreement in Principal was signed.
Keith Ikin says it includes 44 cultural properties, $180 million in cash, and a series of agreements with crown agencies. Some of these are agreements that have never been entered into by some of these agencies previously. We believe it is that part of the settlement that is the real opportunity for us. We want to really want to shift the dial in terms of holding the crown to account for the way it designs and delivers services to our people, he says.
