THE Free State High Court in Bethlehem has convicted the national top 50 most-wanted suspect to a double life sentence after evading arrest for over a decade.
The accused, Thapelo Samuel Mokoena (41) from Makwane Village in Qwaqwa who was now residing in Carletonville, Gauteng escaped from police custody in Makwane, 15 years ago, and his escapade was brought to a halt when Detective Warrant Officer Nkosana Radebe, pounced on him and ensured that he answers for his crimes. A Free state man, who escaped from police custody and has been on the run for 15 years, has been sentenced to two life terms for killing two people on a farm in Bethlehem in 2004.
Thapelo Samuel Mokoena, 41, escaped from police custody in 2005 after he and three others were charged with the murders of Johanna Katherine van Niekerk, 79, and her gardener, Tololo Elias Tsholo, 43, in an attempted robbery.
They were also charged with the attempted murder of two domestic workers who were in the house at the time of the incident. One of them was shot in the hip.
A Free State man who escaped from custody 16 years after being arrested for the murder of two people was finally caught in Gauteng where he had started a family and managed to secure a job.
