A Chicago police officer and male suspect were wounded in an exchange of gunfire Sunday afternoon in West Englewood on the South Side.

The officer was wounded by gunfire about 2 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Sangamon Street and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern said.

The wounded officer is the second cop shot in Englewood since the start of June. On Wednesday, a female officer was wounded. The next day, a CPD canine officer and a deputy U.S. marshal were wounded during a gun battle on the Northwest Side.
