Telling History vs. Making Art: Killer Angels, real and fictional

Part five in a series. In my last post, I began to discuss Michael Shaara’s aesthetic choices for constructing The Killer Angels as he did, and how he adopted a Lost Cause-interpretation of Robert E. Lee as a central choice for his novel. Where Shaara deviates significantly from Lost Cause tradition, though, is his choice to make Confederate…

"Maine's GOP Governor Faces Intensifying Scandal": Paul 'Rage LePage' Playing The Role Of A Mobster « mykeystrokes.com

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) is caught up in a scandal that’s likely to get worse before it gets better. To briefly recap, a Maine charter school hired state House Speaker Mark Eves (D) for a top position, but LePage, a fierce opponent of Democratic legislators, threatened the school – either fire Eves or the…

Letter to the editor: Manners matter to Mainers - Portland Press Herald

The recent Maine Voices column by Tom Desjardin (“The root causes of the 2022 gubernatorial election result,” Nov. 17) is correct in stating that Mainers tend to reelect incumbents. That is true nationwide, and almost goes without saying. It is also true that Maine is becoming a more Democratic (party) state, and for that, Republicans […]

Maine Voices: The root causes of the 2022 gubernatorial election result

I count three: Maine's tendency to leave incumbents in office, the mainstream media's refusal to support a Republican candidate and – above all – the fact that Maine is becoming a more Democratic state.

Mask tension lingers as Maine lawmakers return to statehouse

2 hours ago in Local Photo: 560 WGAN Newsradio AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Tensions between Republicans and Democrats over the use of masks lingered in the Maine Legislature on Wednesday when lawmakers returned to the Maine State House. Maine has lifted mask requirements in most of the state, but they are still required at the state house. Numerous Republican lawmakers have criticized the requirement, and six Republican members and one Libertarian were stripped of committee assignments last week for refusing to comply with the rule. The legislature met in the state house Wednesday for the first time since before the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Several Republican members of the Maine House of Representatives walked the hall of the state house wearing plastic face shields instead of the required masks, and some wore no face coverings at all.
