Top books, video, and audiobooks for children and young adults revealed at ALA Midwinter Virtual January 25, 2021
On January 25, the American Library Association (ALA) announced the top books, digital media, video, and audiobooks for children and young adults including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery, and Printz awards at its Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits taking place virtually from Chicago.

John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature:
When You Trap a Tiger, written by Tae Keller, is the 2021 Newbery Medal winner. The book is published by Random House Children’s Books, a division of Penguin Random House.

The American Library Association is currently holding its annual midwinter meeting and exhibits conference, and part of the event is its Youth Media Awards which houses the Alex Awards, a slate of prizes that are handed out “to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18,” from the prior year.
The ALA just announced this year’s Alex Award winners, and it includes a number of science fiction and fantasy titles.

Nightfire, the new horror imprint that joins Tor, Forge, Tor Teen & Starscape, and Tor.com Publishing as part of Tom Doherty Associates (TDA), is thrilled to announce its first full season of original and unique horror fiction coming out in Fall 2021, now available for preorder at all major retailers.
The Nightfire imprint was launched by TDA President and Publisher Fritz Foy, with the goal of acquiring and publishing across a wide breadth of the horror genre from short story collections to novellas and novels, from standalone works to series, from dark fantasy to the supernatural, from originals to reprints of lost modern classics. The first full season of exciting titles reflects these goals as well as showcases unique and talented voices from both rising stars and well-loved veterans of the horror world.
Tom Doherty Associates, in partnership with 12 independent bookstores, is launching “Read the Room”, a virtual event reading series “meant to bring authors, booksellers, and readers together into the same virtual ‘room. ” Events will be hosted the fourth Wednesday of every month on Crowdcast and will feature authors from Tor, Tor Teen, Forge, Nightfire, and Tordotcom Publishing.
The first event, co-hosted by Loyalty Bookstores, is scheduled for January 27, 2021 with the theme “New Year, New Formats: Debuts Now in Paperback”. It will feature Louise Callaghan, Charlotte Nicole Davis, A.K. Larkwood, and Rita Woods, moderated by TJ Klune. To register for the event, see the Crowdcast website.
