Fargo city leaders voted against the 20% hike despite a city engineer who said the increase is part of a solution to help correct longterm funding issues
While some Fargo city commissioners floated the idea of moving away from special assessments, another considered cutting back on spending and doing less work to right shortages in infrastructure.
“Our partners need to know that they need to cough up some money or there won’t be a bridge… to satisfy their side of the river and their people,” Commissioner John Strand said.
In a presentation to city commissioners, City Engineer Tom Knakmuhs said a public survey revealed that while a majority of people want a bridge built, "most are not willing to pay for a bridge."
