they comes under the faintest bit of scrutiny it just vanishes into nothing. host: that s amazing. you mentioned earlier that the whole chasing of paper and the whole zealousness of this debt collection business got to a larger height during the great recession after the financial crisis because people simply have less money to pay and they have more debt that accumulated. you talk about the term shadow economy which i find very interesting. in the term shadow banking usually it s about hedge funds and the cayman islands tax shelter. the shadow economy is something different. it s something you d discuss with regard to the people on the bottom of this. i want to know if you can talk about whether you think those people how that will evolve going forward from where we are now. guest: the way that i stumbled into this when i was in georgia and looking at the lives of these debtors who were being sued in court over this debt i wanted to get a sense of what their lives were l
it was important to hamilton, for example. jefferson very adamantly disagreed with burke s reading of france. he was a friend of paine s, a close friend during the revolutionary years. he thought that paine s great pamphlet, common sense, was extreme lu important and ought to be extremely important and helped it get distributed. he helped him get a job as the secretary to the committee on foreign relations of the continental congress. and he was a kind of patron of thomas paine s in some ways. when paine came back to america after france jefferson was president. he was wary of being associateed with paine s views on religion so didn t hang out with him very much. but he helped him get established, helped him get a job, and the two knew each other very well. they were friends. sue finish. well, the most superb. well, the most important rule of a bill of rights book fair is that it end on time, so i m afraid we re going to have to skip the remaining two questions. but
to move the thing along quicker, you know, for research or for staffing. and then, as we saw, by the way, you know, in the bill that kept the government going for another eight months or so, we saw writers attach to that, you know, fundamental budget bill what was designed to affect derivatives risk. so congress is in it, they re in wit both feet, they re in it at the front end, they re in it in the middle, and they re in it in the back. there is something, and let me get to this one on the next slide yeah. a guest speaker said derivatives were defined three different ways in dodd/frank on purpose to give the agency more power to actually select the definition that they wanted because they could have more power not on the hill at that point but with the agency defining it. yeah. well, i mean but if you re saying that the agency has the power, you re really saying that the groups that influence the congress to write those three different definitions were expecting some a

going to be we saw it happen with speaker gingrich and it can happen here. boehner walked away from a deal shortly after that. i want to come to the interplay between the leadership on the republican side in in a second but i have to ask this based on what you said. i think you know the president gave what was initially an off the record interview to the des moines register editorial board, speaking although he did not get the endorsement of that paper in one of the things he said in the interview was he believed he could get a grand bargain struck on the debt ceiling if he were reelected on november 6. a son what you re saying they may not be possible if if the freshman and now sophomores and many members who come and don t eventually give a nether blessing to cut a deal. in her may feel in the same tough spot now that but he was last year. a ground part and based on what you say may not be possible if obama wins under any circumstances. this is outside of the book b
there is not domestic you. thank you so much. right behind you. i noticed mr. ornstein s pantheon of views that are still in congress favor mr. lugar will be in a few. it seems once they are on their way out or out the door, they say all the right things. when they are continuing to run, olympia snowe is another great example. what would you suggest we do as a public for others do to encourage politicians in office to the right thing because the right thing to do? tom, you can start. i m curious because he done so much work and then whatever you want to say before. and then i guess, are we closer pass the time? i usually go over. we have many fascinating questions pending, most of which haven t been answered. let me try to run through a couple of them. the conservative wayne is now the party. it s been embraced by the party. its agenda has been embraced by the leadership. the chairman of the budget committee, paul ryan, very able member is the archetype of that agenda,
the other party, you could do an amazing job there now, much better than you ever could before. but there are other things that are at play as well. for example, population sorting. there s a wonderful book that some of you might want to read by a guy named bill bishop called the big sort. and he basically talks about how people, in a sense, they kind of vote with their feet in that people tend to move and concentrate with people like themselves. people are more comfortable when they re with like-minded people, and that this is becoming more and more and more so. and that when you look at, say, democratic districts or look at, look geographically across the country, what are the districts the democrats tend to represent? they tend to be large urban areas and close in suburbs and college towns. and then you say, okay, where do republicans live? small town, rural america and in the more outer reaches which are the faster growing of the suburbs. but that s a clear population
