i will recognize myself for an opening statement and then the ranking member. we are here to look at election security. it s hard to imagine a bipartisan issue. it s what president abraham lincoln meant when he said a government by the people. when our citizens vote, they not only elect their leaders, they choose a direction and set priorities for the nation. elections with integrity strengthen democracy and confer legitimacy and public trust in government. concerns with earlier systems have the passage of the 2002 help america vote act. this requires the national institute of standards and technology for which we have jurisdiction to work with the assistance commission to work on the technical and voluntary guidelines for voting. we will discuss the current guidelines that are in place for the states to protect their voting and elections systems. though they were voluntary, i hope to hear whether they were sufficient to safeguard and whether the state effectively use them. t

been stabbed. his name won t be released until his family is notified. r-p-d homicide detectives say robbins admitted stabbing the man. robbins was charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. police say they are not looking for any additional suspects. a sparks man has been charged with child neglect and discharging a firearm into a home after an incident this morning. sparks police say they were called to the 3000 block of keogh drive shortly before 3am for a report of shots fired inside a home. officers say the suspect in the shooting is gordon mellinger. who has had a history of mental illness. two women and two teenage girls were inside the home during the incident. police convinced one of the women over the phone to get to the back yard. where they were able to escort her to safety. this woman confirmed that mellinger had fired two shots inside the home. swat was brought in and once they started negotiating with mellinger.. he walked out of the house and and two girls
