I remember somebody walked up to me and said, ‘You know your mom is a rock star.’ And I said, ‘Really?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, she’s the only one I know that you can say, ‘I was talking to Henrietta, and everybody knew who you were talking about. ”
Smith drew her last breaths on April 21. She was 98 and lived in Delray Beach.

Drawn from previous collections, the African American Experience in Florida (AAE) is a new, online portal that includes hundreds of artifacts that highlight the injustices that affected Black communities and businesses. Some of the archives date back to the early 1800’s. As part of USF’s ongoing efforts to dismantle systemic racism and promote racial equity, the portal will support the growing need for resource materials that reveal the experiences of Black lives.
