Wet Wet Wet star Marti Pellow has given his former band his blessing after they replaced him with a new frontman, saying: “Life s too short.”
LAST Friday saw the passing of one of the most popular characters on the rugby league scene at the age of 71 after a long illness. Alan Gwilliam, whose first name was Joseph, was a pupil at St Anselms School and a product of the famous nursery at Blackbrook ARLFC. He turned professional with the Saints on 28th September 1971, when the club had just celebrated their second consecutive Championship success. He made his debut soon afterwards, when he came off the bench against Batley, in a 35-5 victory at Knowsley Road on 25th October. Although Alan was essentially a scrum-half, he could fill in at centre, as well as in the halves and he was utilised off the bench on 15 occasions during his 47 appearances for the seniors. A really tough customer, his best season was in 1973-74, when he made 25 appearances and scored 6 tries. He became a valuable squad member, especially when scrum-half Ken Kelly was transferred to Bradford Northern in 1973.
GLOBAL pop superstar Ed Sheeran’s decision to become Ipswich Town FC’s shirt sponsor has made headlines around the world…but as with so many aspects of modern life, it was Clydebank that led the way. It was announced on Thursday that the singer has agreed an initial one-year deal to sponsor shirts for the Portman Road club’s men’s and women’s first teams. Sheeran, who is a lifelong fan of the English League One club, grew up in Framlington in Suffolk, just outside Ipswich, and still lives nearby. But for Bankies of a certain age it all brings back memories of the day when the town’s very own global music superstars went back to their roots by putting their name on the jerseys of the town’s footballers.
POP Icons Wet Wet Wet will put on a special performance online for fans this month. The Clydebank group, fronted by singer Kevin Simm, is set to stream The Journey Out of Lockdown which will go live at 7.30 pm on Saturday, April 17 in association with the charity Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy. Kevin said: “It’s great just to be able to perform live again even without an audience present - although we would all hugely prefer to see the faces of our fans 2rather than just video cameras in front of us. Enjoy the stream and we’re very much hoping that the journey out of lockdown continues so we can see everybody on the road again really soon”.
