Passing of the torch: Tommy s Country Ham House becomes Lewis Barbecue

On Saturday, Tommy Stevenson, owner of Tommy’s County Ham House publicly handed over his restaurant space to John Lewis, owner of Lewis Barbecue. For now, Tommy’s story isn’t over just yet, the restaurant will remain open until May 30, but there was a significance in the moment. The start of archiving 36 years, and the beginning of a new story. Just before guests arrived to what was being called the Passing of the Torch ceremony Saturday evening, Stevenson and Lewis appeared to have an easy banter. Stevenson shared stories about Tommy’s, the two traded experiences navigating the current staffing challenges and discussed the beauty of a perfectly designed, big kitchen.

He also received a plaque from all law enforcement officers, donated in part by Cowart Awards. More than 60 officers, from as far away as Florida, returned to Tommy s Country Ham House for Tuesday s event. Stevenson, who has run the restaurant since 1985, said it’s been a pleasure serving officers over the years. He said he appreciates what they’ve done to put their lives at stake every night, going out without their wives and families knowing if they’ll be coming back. “I would serve them anytime they’d come in,” Stevenson said. “I always tried to take care of them. They’ve been a big part of my life.”
