Following a tough year for the nation s small businesses, Topeka leaders this week celebrated local businesses that weathered the storm and demonstrated excellence throughout 2020.
At the Greater Topeka Partnership s 40th Annual Small Business Awards ceremony Tuesday, six local businesses were chosen from among 18 finalists in six categories as award winners:

More than 20 artists, art programs and projects have been named as recipients of this year s TopArts grant program.
The program, funded since 2016 by the city of Topeka and administered by ArtsConnect, offers support for art programs in multiple disciplines.
A variety of projects will be funded with the help of the program. Following is a complete list of the 2021 grantees:
• Artistic Expressions Healing Arts Initiative: This program created by artist John Sebelius focuses on improving the quality of life for veterans suffering from post-traumatic-stress through art and self-exploration.
• Backstage TPAC at the Topeka Performing Arts Center: This outreach and arts education program works with at-risk pre-kindergarten through high school students.
Black Lives Matter Topeka is partnering with the boys Highland Park High School basketball team and Topeka Habitat for Humanity to distribute food boxes from Operation Food Secure, according to a post on the City of Topeka’s Facebook page.
The event takes place at Highland Park High School, 2424 S.E. California Ave., from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
“Neighbors will receive a food box consisting of fresh produce, milk, and other items along with community resource information,” the Facebook post said. “The boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.”
The Topeka Rescue Mission’s Operation Food Secure program was almost put on hold after federal funding lapsed, but Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas granted up to $350,000 to keep the program running while federal funding was approved, the Capital-Journal reported Jan. 8. The program focuses on delivering food “the last mile.”
