Sanibel teachers named on Golden Apple finalist list By Staff | Jan 26, 2021 PHOTO PROVIDED Teacher Joseph Camputaro is one of two educators at The Sanibel School who are finalists for the Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program. The other teacher is Barbara Scarnato. The Sanibel School announced that out of a public school district with more than 5,000 teachers, two island employees are finalists for the 34th Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program. “We are very proud of Joseph Camputaro and Barbara Scarnato, who will represent The Sanibel School as our Golden Apple finalists,” Principal Jamie Reid said in a prepared statement. “From this finalist group of 35 outstanding teachers, six teachers will be selected as Golden Apple Teachers this spring.”

Unfortunately, they often do not have the resources to be able to do that. The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools recently held a socially distanced classroom and school grants ceremony in which approximately $80,000 in grants were awarded via 44 grants to educators, schools and administrators throughout the School District of Lee County, including multiple East Zone schools. Educators, administrators, the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools’ executive board members, selection committee members and sponsors gathered to recognize the recipients for their innovative and creative grant projects that will enhance student learning in the current school year.

Smith was surprised with the commendation bright and early last Tuesday morning by Superintendent Dr. Gregory K. Adkins and members of the Lee County School Board. Smith was extremely surprised and thanked first and foremost her students for the honor. “This is so exciting and it’s because of you guys!” Smith said. Upon awarding Smith, Adkins gave some background on the well-loved, Lehigh Acres teacher.

Alyssa Smith is in her sixth year of teaching at Tortuga Preserve Elementary in Lehigh Acres. Her focus has always been on Exceptional Student Education and she is currently a Special Education teacher in a Social Functioning classroom. “I grew up in a household with two sisters who have special needs on opposite ends of a need’s spectrum,” Smith says. “As long as I can remember, I have voiced that I wanted to be a teacher for children like my sisters. I believe that every student, no matter what their abilities, deserves every opportunity both in school and in life.”

Lee County schools announce Teacher of the Year LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County School District announced the Teacher of the Year. Tortuga Preserve Elementary Teacher Alyssa Smith now holds the title after she was announced as the district’s Teacher of the Year Tuesday. Smith is now in the running for Teacher of the Year for the entire state of Florida. Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins surprised Smith with the announcement around 8:30 a.m. Smith has been working for Tortuga Preserve Elementary in Lehigh Acres for six years, according to the Lee County School District. She works as a Special Education teacher.
