Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said that Total Defence saved lives and jobs when it was put into action during the pandemic in 2020. - The Straits Times/ANN SINGAPORE, Feb 14 (The Straits Times/ANN): Total Defence was commemorated more as a concept and exhortation when the going was good and smooth for many years, Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen has said. But the Covid-19 pandemic has reaffirmed it as a living concept , vital and necessary to the country s collective well-being, and central to its ability to overcome grave challenges, he added. In his annual Total Defence Day message, the defence minister said the concept - when put into action during the pandemic last year - saved lives and jobs.

More than 35,000 pre-schoolers take part in art to learn about Total Defence

SINGAPORE - To cultivate an appreciation of Total Defence, more than 35,000 children from some 500 pre-school centres are making artworks as part of their lessons leading up to Total Defence Day on Feb 15. Called Our Hopes, Our Singapore Art Jam, the programme aims to teach children the importance of Total Defence, its six pillars and how every Singaporean plays a part in building a strong, secure and cohesive nation, including the fight against Covid-19, said Safra in a statement on Thursday (Feb 11). The collaboration between Safra and the Association of Early Childhood and Training Services (Assets) also aims to strengthen psychological defence among families by encouraging positive conversations about the future beyond the pandemic, Safra added.

Total Defence: Animation students hope to inspire others to donate blood SINGAPORE Through their 30-second animation of red blood cells working at a blood bank, four animation students from Nanyang Polytechnic who took part in an annual competition hope to inspire Singaporeans to do their part for Total Defence by donating blood if they are eligible to do so. Sakura Wong Mei Ying, Karis Lee Si En, Zhang Xiaoxin, and Eunice Koo Li Wei, all 18, are part of Team Changi Airport, which is one of nine teams shortlisted in the youth category of the annual N.E.mation! competition, organised by the Ministry of Defence’s Nexus office, which promotes national education.
