Eclipse spectators staked out their spots across three countries Sunday, fervently hoping for clear skies despite forecasts calling for clouds along most of the sun-vanishing route. “I have arrived in the path of totality!” Ian Kluft announced Sunday afternoon after pulling into Mesquite from Portland, Oregon, a 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) drive. A total eclipse happens when the moon lines up perfectly between Earth and the sun, blotting out the sunlight.

As people gear up for the solar eclipse, we spoke with a zookeeper to see how the eclipse could impact the animals. The Tulsa Zoo will be monitoring its animals to see how the eclipse affects their behavior.
