• The world s toughest rally is taking place in Saudi Arabia for the second time.  • The 12-stage event is being led Stephane Peterhansel in the car section for Mini X-Raid.  The 43rd edition of the Dakar Rally officially passed the halfway mark Sunday with the completion of the marathon stage. The seventh stage started in Ha il and ended in Sakaka on Sunday after the crews enjoyed a well-deserved rest day.  The world s toughest rally is taking place in Saudi Arabia for only the second time in history after a decade in South America. The event, originally called the Paris-Dakar, took place between Europe and African from 1979 to 2007.

Stephane Peterhansel Leads the Dakar Rally Through Week One The Mini JCW driver leads Toyota s Nasser Al-Attiyah by nearly eight minutes FRANCK FIFEGetty Images After seven stages and eight days of competition, Stephane Peterhansel and co-driver Edouard Boulanger lead the Dakar Rally by nearly eight minutes. Peterhansel has not yet won any individual stage in his Mini JCW buggy, but his consistent high finishes have kept in him the classification lead since the end of stage 2 and his lead on Toyota s Nasser Al-Attiyah is up to nearly eight minutes. The gaps to third and fourth are even more significant; Peterhansel s Mini JCW teammate Carlos Sainz sits 41 minutes behind in third, while Orlen s Jakub Przygonski is an hour and twenty minutes behind in fourth.
