Two of the five OPIR missile warning satellites will be polar-oriented to sense ballistic missile threats from adversaries. All five are designed to not only detect launches but to track missiles as they maneuver.

The name change for SDA's seven-layer network of satellite and ground systems was approved by both Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall and space acquisition czar Frank Calvelli, and is designed to better reflect the network's actual mission, SDA Director Derek Tournear told Breaking Defense.

"We'll do away with the GEOs, and the big, exquisite expensive satellites," said SDA Director Derek Tournear.

A decision about whether to go forward this year with Tracking Layer Tranche 1 or wait until fiscal 2023 funds are available could happen "within the next few weeks," said SDA Director Derek Tournear.
