Perth’s cultural cringe carousel completed another rotation last week as the city’s Lord Mayor tried to break the cycle of self-loathing and find the capital’s identity just months after his local government buried a report born from a similar process undertaken just before his election in 2020.
Trying to reclaim the 60-year-old title as the ‘City of Lights’, building a cable car from Elizabeth Quay to Kings Park, activation of the Swan River, addressing the homeless and amenity issues within the CBD, and embracing the vastness and isolation of Western Australia were just some of the themes to come out of the ‘What is Perth?’ brainstorming session led by Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas with political, business, and cultural leaders on Friday.

Businesses across the State are being encouraged to enter the annual Western Australian Export Awards.
The awards recognise businesses for the significant contribution they make to both the State and national economies.
Launched in 1988, the awards’ past winners have come from a range of sectors, including education, information technology, mining and agriculture.
Western Australian businesses can enter 13 different award categories, including Agribusiness, Food and Beverages; Advanced Technologies; International Education and Training; Minerals, Energy and Related Services; Manufacturing and Advanced Materials; Regional Exporter; and Small Business.
