Like, you know, hydrogen powered cars and jet packs and futuristically hypermodern stuff, just some basic systematic safety upgrades that would take advantage of the fact that we are now a society that has things like computing machines and gps. this is not the most high-tech stuff. what they mandated for the u.s. rail system is something called positive train control. a very basic avoidance system that reduces stupid operator error or a train conductor having a heart attack at the engine. it re...

Crash of 2013 and at least preliminarily, it appears that the cause was the same. it appears that what caused the derailment was the train traveling at a very high rate of speed into a sharp curve. we do not yet know why that happened last night in philadelphia in this derailment that claimed seven lives already and may have claimed more. the ntsb determined that the arent train engineer was speeding at more than 80 miles an hour going into that 30 mile an hour curve was because the train engine...

In the u.s. would have to get just slightly more modern, not like, you know, hydrogen powered cars and jet packs and futuristically hypermodern stuff, just some basic systematic safety upgrades that would take advantage of the fact that we are now a society that has things like computing machines and gps. this is not the most high-tech stuff. what they mandated for the u.s. rail system is something called positive train control. a very basic avoidance system that reduces the risk that stupid ope...

Infrastructure, is it? >> that is correct. the northeast corridor tracks are very old. some of the infrastructure was built in the 1930s. it was renewed in the 1970s and early 1980s. so there is infrastructure work that needs to be done. but it does not appear that infrastructure problems played a role in this particular derailment. >> and, steven, a lot of people are looking to the train engineer you now for answers to a lot of questions. but how does amtrak screen their engineers before they s...

Miles per hour twice posted speed limit when it jumped rails in spain in 2013 79 people killed. speed to blame in the crash of the new york commuter train that killed four. unlike on airplanewise two pilots in the cockpit the train engineer is often alone in the cab aided by positive train control or ptc, an electronic system which can take control of the train if it is traveling too fast. sections of the northeast corridor from new haven, connecticut to boston and philadelphia to washington hav...

Engineer, if the train seems to have not noticed a signal or if the train is speeding, right? if the train engineer doesnt respond to that signal, positive train control can override the human. override that locomotive engineer and automatically slow the train down or stop the train by remote control. this sort of system does require equipment upgrades to trains, putting a lot of basic train infrastructure on the grid. it requires some gps technology. this is not like learning to live on mars, r...

Or more and that force becomes much greater. gravity is low enough and its heavy enough up here, it will stay on the tracks. thats not the case back there. the center of gravity is different back here. the weight distribution is different and thats why some passenger say they felt the car sort of flying up off the tracks. we know that can happen because we saw it happen in spain when this train crash occurred. the train was supposed to be going 50 miles per hour. instead, it was going over a hun...

Sure he wasnt on the phone, there is a search warrant trying to get on his phone, information that might have been incriminating or explains what is going on. >> and there was a train incident in the past where a train engineer was believed to be on the phone. >> that is right. were speaking beyond my knowledge here, but i also believe that engineers on amtrak are not supposed to even have phones. >> and the bottom line is they want to make sure he wasnt distracted by anything, whether it be a p...

Will come out. it looks that way, but a lot of it was saying dont jump to judgment. lets have the investigation and -- >> and the ntsb hasnt spoken to the train engineer yet, either. were hearing more about the derailment from the passengers who survive it. >> gayle rooney describes the scene to don lemon. >> so i take the train home all the time. this is my usual train. everything is always fine. youre on a train and you assume nothing is going to happen to you. trains are supposed to be the sa...

Bostian. give us a sense of what we know about him, especially in terms of his experience as a train engineer. >> well, we know he started with amtrak in 2006 as a conductor and in 2010 he moved up to be an engineer. so he has almost a decade of experience. what we know about what happened, he was going 106 miles per hour. the train was. and he tried to put on the brakes at the last second according to officials. but it was just too late. we know that after that he was treated at a local hospita...
