Artemis 1 Moon Mission: NASA's Orion To Break 52-Year-Old Record Of Apollo 13

Florida: NASA’s Orion capsule reached the moon Monday, whipping around the far side and buzzing the lunar surface on its way to a record-breaking orbit with test dummies sitting in for astronauts. It’s the first time a capsule has visited the moon since NASA’s Apollo program 50 years ago.

The close approach of 81 miles occurred as the crew capsule and its three wired-up dummies were on the far side of the moon. Astronauts will take Orion for a ride around the moon as early as 2024.

Orion's flight path took it over the landing sites of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 — humanity's first three lunar touchdowns.

"This is one of those days that you've been thinking about and talking about for a long, long time," flight director Zeb Scoville said.

NASA's Orion spacecraft makes its closest approach to the moon and was able to capture stunning images of the Earth and the lunar surface as part of the Artemis mission.
