New York City's sprawling subway system will be fully wired for cellphone and Wi-Fi service within about 10 years under a plan approved by transit officials this week.

In 10 years, New York City's subway system will be fully wired for Wi-Fi services. The $600 million project will be built by Transit Wireless.

The MTA is moving forward with several projects, including the highly desired in-tunnel cell phone service plan and the highly controversial Manhattan congestion pricing program.

The MTA plans to add phone service and Wi-Fi to its 418 miles of subway tunnels.

The service expansion is part of a connectivity plan that will also install Wi-Fi at all above-ground and Staten Island Railway stations.

Communications infrastructure provider BAI Communications moved to extend its North American presence by acquiring ZenFi Networks.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced a public-private partnership to provide cell coverage throughout all 418 track miles of subway tunnels, along with an expansion of Wi-Fi service to all 191 above-ground subway and 21 Staten Island Railway stations.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials presented Monday a 10-year plan to install equipment that lets riders use their phones in all of the subway’s underground tunnels.
