TIZ executive director Maurice Nyambe TRANSPARENCY International Zambia has urged President Edgar Lungu to suspend Minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya and both his permanent secretaries in order to pave way for an independent investigation into issues raised in the Auditor General’s report. Yet there are some individuals whose courage and principles made them inspiring figures in the political landscape last year. In this article and the next, I list two sets of citizens of 2020: those who through their actions offered hope to Zambians and those who were huge disappointments. Today, I focus on those Zambians who inspired public trust. Next week, it will be the turn of the individuals and institutions who disappointed. The heroes Zambia suffers from a deficit of genuine, consistent heroes. Perhaps there are many unsung heroes whose quiet and diligent work in our own communities goes unnoticed. Yesterday, Patriotic Front Eastern Province chairman Andrew Lubusha appeared for interrogations at Force Headquarters in connection with the theft of a South African truck, a matter that is under INTERPOL investigations. And former finance minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane says Zesco’s decision to acquire the unexplained €1.7 billion loan may cost Zambia’s chance for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package. Last week, an investigation by News Diggers! indicated that Zesco was seeking an unprecedented €1.78 billion loan from suspicious unlicensed and unregulated lenders based in Bosnia, Italy and Thailand, and Zesco hadfailed to explain the purpose of the loan to-date.
