right now. important to point out we have information about the man who was rescued. he was on the bravo side of the building. basically the side when you come up with the driveway according to firefighters and he's 24 years old. he was rescued from here. right now let's come back out live. firefighters are still, i want to show you, on the fourth floor, fourth floor apartment and what's interesting is that it started on the first floor. those flames were so intense, so strong they shot up literally four stories and shot out of the roof. you're now going to get an update from scott graham, the spokesperson for montgomery county fire rescue. >> we're talking to the family initially and it may have begun back in a bedroom area but we want to confirm that. that's where it was first noticed by the family members. so our investigators will continue through the evening to try to pinpoint exactly where it started. >> reporter: now once again we're talking about 80 people homeless tonight. firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of this fire. and there haven't been any reports of serious injuries. ten people transported, three firefighters, seven tenants all minor nonlife threatening injuries. tonight it appears that the u.s. is only a few days away from a military response in syria. vice president joe biden said today there is no doubt that syrian president bashir al assad's government is responsible for the alleged use of chemical weapons last week. tonight four naval u.s. naval ships are in the mediterranean and ready to strike. nbc steve handelsman following the developments now from capitol hill. >> reporter: pentagon sources tell nbc news the first time the u.s. military could launch an attack is thursday. it's shaping up like libya in 2011 as the u.s. is poised to intervene. administration officials insist that would only be to prevent any future chemical weapons attack and not an effort to try to take down the syrian government. the u.s. have not come forward yet to give them a call. >> the governor of virginia says he's confident that an important part of the state's new education reform law will survive a challenge in the state supreme court. the norfolk school district is suing over the new law that allows the state to take control of any school that fails to meet standards for three consecutive years. four schools are eligible for that state take over. that includes jefferson houston elementary school in alexandria. speaking at a failing middle school in norfolk today, governor mcdonnell said he's disappointed in the decision to sue. >> i know the norfolk school system has maintained that our legislation is unconstitutional. and i don't accept that for a minute. i think they are absolutely flat wrong. >> alexandria school superintendent is also fighting the plan to take over jefferson houston elementary. morton sherman is the superintendent. he says he sees good progress since they put in a new principal in charge. changed school hours. and hired new teachers. safety first. tonight what fairfax county coaches are teaching football players in hopes of preventing concussions. wildfire out west reporter: cautious optimism for these fire teams. they are working right now to protect towns like this and living in these towns. this has become a base camp for those crews out on front line work 24 hours shifts. 24 hours on the front lines of the blaze. there are close to 4,000 firefighters along the front lines right now. almost one for each of the homes still threatened by the flames. >> structures are people's homes, their lives, they have been there for generations, all their memorabilia, personal -- it's not just a home, it's somebody's life. >> reporter: lives on edge. >> mornings it's really heavy, thick smoke, hard to breathe. >> reporter: evidence the fire is inching closer but strike teams continue to push back. digging out containment lines holding off the flames and making progress. containment climbed 20%. >> we'll keep it out of there but it's going to get a little hairy. take a breath, you'll be all right. >> reporter: there's barely time to take a breath. working around the clock crews know they can't slow down or take a break because the fire won't. >> we have very explosive fuels out there unlike anything we've seen before. >> reporter: overwhelming conditions even for veteran firefighters. >> i've fought fire from alaska to florida. from new england to california. and this is one of the toughest fights ever identify faced. >> reporter: a fight that still far from over here. yeah. unfortunately this fire still growing overnight it swallowed another 30,000 acres. they are going need some help from the weather to get that thing under control. >> of course they would love to see some rain but that won't happen or see lower humidity. we would too. today a hot day for us. we were talking about temperatures in the mid-90s. that heat index approached 100 in many areas for the first time in about a month. out there right now you can see the hazy conditions across our region. we did see a few clouds come through from time to time. a few showers earlier. those showers are gone. we saw a high temperature of 94 degrees. that's the hottest temperature we've seen since july 20th well over a month. one again we've not seen a very hot august. i think this is only the fourth or fifth time above 90 degrees all august long. we're not done just yet. maybe we are. 91 degrees, some sunshine outing there right now but also some cloud cover. heat index at 94. it's not only warm but on the humid side. temperatures are cooler, back to the west. 82 in leesburg. 82 gaithersburg. 84 in manassas. 91 degrees in d.c. 86 in fredericksburg. we've seen a little bit more in the way of cloud cover and shower activity earlier. radar all clear except for way down towards the northern neck. only showers left on the board right now. ro did have a few showers portions of loudoun county including around leesburg. you see what's been happening. here are the clouds. this is where the cooler air is coming on in here. coming down from these clouds and down the south nothing but sunshine from the potomac to the east. we're looking at warmer temperatures. that want sunshine will remain important the next few hours before the clouds try to come back in. we move through overnight, here's future weather. everybody seeing the cloud cover early tomorrow morning. not starting off on too bad of a note. back to the west a few showers coming in. by noon look what happens here. back towards front royal, winchester and culpeper some areas could see locally heavy rain and inside the metro area. we got a lot going on around noon at the national mall. i expect to see showers. the biggest question will these storms develop back to the west or develop farther to the west. the best indication they will stay back to the west. can't rule out a shower or heavier downpour in or around the mall tomorrow. we clear out just a little bit in the afternoon with sunshine. then another round for scattered thunderstorms. for tomorrow's march on washington, as i just showed you about ten, 15 minutes ago i expect a shower chance early in the morning. then sunshine. then we'll see scattered storms developing around noon, maybe continue in some locations off and on, not going to be an all day event but you may want to take the umbrella. temperatures moving into the 80s. most of the area will be cooler tomorrow because of the cloud cover and shower activity especially back towards the west, 84 in winchester. 87 in washington. 88 out towards the eastern shore. we should see more sunshine. the beaches, this is labor day weekend coming up i think you're looking good. chance of showers both saturday and sunday, a couple of storms but i still think it will be pretty nice beach weather. 85 on saturday. 76 on sunday. labor day, high temperature of 84. some sunshine. all in all this last weekend of summer looking pretty good. 86 on thursday. isolated she's, although most of us should stay dry. friday looking nice high of 88. 87 on saturday. couple of fronts coming in. a little unsettled this weekend. expect typical summer like weather. high temperatures in the upper 80s to 90 degrees with a chance of showers saturday, sunday and into monday across the interior. the weather may not feel like it yet but high school football season is starting back up. coaches in fairfax county are bringing in a new strategy to the field. as northern virginia bureau reporter david culver has parents cheering from the sidelines. >> reporter: hit after hit after hit -- >> sometimes your natural reaction to cringe a little but that's the nature of the beast. >> reporter: even parents admit full contact is just a part of football. but here in fairfax county all 25 high school programs are starting up this new season with a renewed focus on safety. >> we're hoping we see a reduction in the concussions in particular and we should know that by the end of this year. >> reporter: he has been coaching here for 18 seasons. he took part in the new training called heads up. it was initiate and paid for by usa football. fairfax county becomes the first school district in the nation to have every coaching staff trained in the program. the coaches realize you can't reverse bad form after a play. you can only reinforce certain techniques. >> working on form, head down, chest out. it was really helpful. >> no movement. >> reporter: the program brings more athletic trainers on to the field. constantly checking equipment. >> it definitely makes you feel more confident. >> reporter: the new techniques are not only giving players more confidence they are also reassuring parents as they look on from the bleachers. >> i think it's a lot of insurance for us parents knowing we're leaving our kids in great hands. >>
