It’s been three months since the UAB football team ended a most unusual season in the most unusual way.
Despite winning a second conference championship in three years, the Blazers were unable to finish the 2020 season in style South Carolina withdrew from the Gasparilla Bowl less than a week before it was scheduled but are back on the field as they opened spring practice, Tuesday, March 16, in Legacy Pavilion at the UAB Football Operations Complex in Birmingham.
“We always look for great organization and that’s the first thing I told them,” UAB head coach Bill Clark said. “That’s why I look for all the little things: Do they come out properly equipped? Are their minds right? We got high expectations for this group. For us, it’s can we practice in the manner we want to practice with everybody getting better and protecting each other. I saw that today.”

The Blazers (6-3, 4-1 C-USA) put together a gallery-worthy defensive masterpiece and Brown ran with malicious intent in a 22-13 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in the 2020 Ryan Conference USA Championship, Friday, Dec. 18, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia.
UAB is the only team in conference history to play in three straight title games and win their championships on the road.
There were tears. There was anger. There was despair.
In a season of sacrifices and struggles because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the swings of success that resulted in national rankings and individual accolades, Friday s championship result was not the storybook ending the Marshall football program sought. After a perfect start to the season through seven games, the Herd captured the C-USA East Division despite a regular season ending loss to Rice, and then those woes extended in a 22-13 loss to the UAB Blazers at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. We accepted the adversity all the way up to this point, Marshall sophomore linebacker Eli Neal said. We just didn t come through this time.

The Blazers (5-3, 3-1 C-USA) clinched its third consecutive Conference USA western division title with a 21-16 win over the Rice Owls, Saturday, Dec. 12, at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas.
UAB was down Spencer Brown and DeWayne McBride, due to COVID-19 tests and contact tracing, but had a solid showing in the run game with a by-committee approach that accounted for 137 yards. Larry Wooden got the first start of his career and finished with 11 attempts for 33 yards, Jermaine Brown Jr. had nine carries for 33 yards and Lucious Stanley had seven attempts for 30 yards and a touchdown.
