It took a lockdown, but Winona County is crushing the curve as coronavirus infections keep falling across the area. After a massive surge in cases in November and early December, Winona County is now on track to get back to the high but not nearly as severe level of spread the area saw in October. There were 116 new cases this week, down from 148 last week and 233 two weeks ago. Winona County’s unofficial 14-day case rate dropped to 58 on Tuesday, the lowest since November 4 and nearly at the 50-case threshold for partially in-person elementary classes.
Deaths also dropped in Winona County for the first time in weeks. Three Winona County residents died as a result of COVID in the past week, down from six last week. The county’s total death toll stood at 42 on Tuesday.
