Mayor Jon Billups said the city had been looking into options to tear it down when developer Merge LLC inquired about taking the lot as part of a project to build housing downtown. The neighboring building, an old Moose Lodge, was also purchased to be torn down as part of the project. The two old buildings will be replaced with a brand new structure that will include apartments and commercial space. Billups said the city agreed to pay a portion of the demolition cost, and the company will also be able to take advantage of Tax Increment Financing, or TIF to recoup some of their costs.

Developer Hopes to Have Tama Two Building Apartments Ready to Rent by April 2022

  Wells said retaining walls have been built and he s met with city and fire code inspectors. He said they re now working to get utility hookups coordinated. Wells hopes tenants will be moving into the 24 apartments of the new building by this time next year.  The building will have one and two bedroom apartments upstairs, and a large space for rent on the main floor, which Wells says could be used for a grocery store, boutique shop, restaurant, or office space. Wells also mentioned that his apartments will include a parking space at a nearby garage that he also owns. Wells said more than half of the apartments will be eligible for the affordable housing program.

Galesburg Man Pleads Guilty in Minneapolis Arson Case

Matthew Lee Rupert A Galesburg man pleaded guilty to one count of arson in connection with last year s protests in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd. The Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota said a sentencing date will be scheduled later for Matthew Lee Rupert, age 28. Prosecutors said Rupert announced on Facebook Live that he was in Minneapolis and that he was there to riot. They also said the video showed Rupert encouraging violence against police officers. The video also shows him breaking into buildings and looting businesses. Prosecutors said Rupert entered a boarded-up Sprint store, knocked over several boxes, and sprayed the pile of boxes with lighter fluid. He then told someone else who was a juvenile at the time to light the pile on fire.
