Manufacturing plays a critical role in the UK economy. The industry makes up 11% of Gross Value Added (GVA), 44% of total UK exports, and directly employs 2.6 million people. It is, however, a sector that has had to navigate a vast range of challenges over the past few years, including socioeconomic turbulence, lockdowns, impending decisions around trade deals with Europe and the potential impact on supply chains.
Amidst such uncertainty there is one thing that remains clear: manufacturers face a time of inevitable change at every level of their business. And it is how this change is embraced that will ultimately determine the winners from the losers.
Project set to deliver first 5G agri-robot The agritech start-up for sustainable farming, Small Robot Company (SRC), has announced its partnership in the 5G RuralDorset project together with Wessex Internet, Telint and Dorset Council.
The project will develop and prove a blueprint for rural-optimised 5G connectivity, with the worldâs first 5G-ready agri-robot for arable farms and will enable rapid deployment of 5G to rural areas. This has, according to SBC, the potential to dramatically close the Rural/Urban digital divide for farming and rural communities - boosting rural investment, creating skilled jobs and improving prosperity.
The project will develop a reliable and interoperable 5G network that is custom-designed for farmers and the particular challenges of rural connectivity. It will look to explore how 5G and its roll out might be able to provide a step-change in the industry. The £7 million project is being part-funded (£4.5m) by the D
