KISD extending school closure due to lack of water Source: Killeen ISD and last updated 2021-02-21 14:28:23-05 KILLEEN, TX — Killeen ISD is extending their closure through Wednesday as a result of not having access to water needed for drinking, restrooms, cooking, and district-wide fire suppression systems. All campuses will be closed for students Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. In-person and remote learners will not be required to engage during this time. The district said they are assessing their ability to reopen campuses to students at the earliest on Thursday, February 25, 2021 if water supply allows. "We are focusing all efforts on supporting our community, repairing extensive damage to facilities and preparing for reopening once adequate water supplies are re-established," the statement said. "The reality of the situation is we do not have enough bottled water to support 30,000+ students and employees coming to campuses every day. We need the community to help us conserve water, identify and repair leaks and busted pipes, so we can build up the reserve necessary to support our community."

Donating toys: VFW gives back to Killeen schools

A partnership marked with giving and continued service continued this season between an elementary school and a local veterans’ organization. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191 on Zephyr Road in Killeen forged adoption with nearby Ira Cross Elementary School years ago and once again recently, veterans arrived at the school to fill several tables at the front entrance with donated toys. Post Commander Kevin Williams said that Ira Cross is the closest school to the VFW building so it makes sense to serve the school. Ira Cross Principal Tomas Sias knows the service-minded veterans go well beyond the call of duty in their contribution. This year the group brought 200 unwrapped gifts to the school.
