Itasca County marks one year of COVID

Minnesota’s first case of COVID-19 was identified on March 6, 2020.  Since then, Itasca County has seen 3,141 cases, 46 deaths, 221 hospitalizations, 49 intensive care unit stays, and 9,297 first vaccinations.  “What a year,” said Kelly Chandler, Itasca County Public Health division manager.  “We did not know in March 2020 how COVID spread; now we know it is primarily airborne.  We know that good hygiene, including hand washing, is important, but even more important is masking to prevent the droplets carrying the virus from spreading to others. “A year ago, we did not know that you could spread COVID prior to showing symptoms.  Now we know you can spread it two days prior to showing symptoms or even without showing symptoms at all.

Second Harvest North Central Food Bank Hosting Virtual Fundraiser

Fox21Online The Food Bank Hopes to Raise $50,000 During the Virtual Event January 19, 2021 Due to the COVID pandemic, the organization will host its first-ever virtual Chef’s Gala. The event typically takes place at the Timberlake Lodge and serves as the Food Bank’s largest fundraiser of the year. Last year the fundraiser helped collect over $80,000, however, organizers are setting a goal of $50,000 this year. Staff says they saw a 30 percent increase in the need for food assistance throughout North Central Minnesota in 2020. With the increase, the community rallied together to support their neighbors. “The communities have been amazing during this time. We just don’t know what’s going to happen in 2021 there’s a lot of things up in the air right now and we are just making sure we are ready and able to help anybody who’s in need,” said Trisha Zimmerman, development director at Second Harvest North Central Food Bank.
