A Vermilion Parish Sheriff s deputy was shot Wednesday afternoon and another person is dead, the Louisiana State Police said.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff s Office and Abbeville Police Department were serving an order of protective custody to Dwight Brown at about 12:30 p.m. within Abbeville, said state police spokesperson Trooper First Class Thomas Gossen.
After arriving, 41-year-old Brown shot at the deputy and officers, who took cover behind a patrol car, Gossen said. The deputy was hit by gunfire. As the suspect stood in the roadway aiming a rifle at the deputy and officers, the deputy returned fire striking and fatally wounding the suspect, Gossen said.

Alice Abbott on Jan. 3 was driving her Lincoln Town Car when she was hit as she attempted to cross Jacqulyn Street from South Hospital Drive in Vermilion Parish. The 86-year-old s car was hit on the driver s rear corner by a Ram 4500 pickup truck, said state police spokesperson Trooper First Class Thomas Gossen.
