Most of these rising case numbers have been attributed to the now dominant Delta variant, which is twice as transmissible as previous strains. Almost all of U.S. COVID-19 deaths in June were among unvaccinated people. Rising COVID-19 case numbers in U.S. Hotspots as the Delta variant rapidly spreads. Dr. Peter Hotez, Chair of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine: “Wherever vaccination rates are low with a high percentage of the virus isolants, or the Delta variant which is twice as transmissible as the original lineage you’re going to have lots of COVID cases and lots of hospitalizations.”
