just this evening, president trump pivoted to another aspect of the gun control debate, writing on twitter, quote, whether we are republican or democrat, we must now focus on strengthening background checks. the president will host what the white house has billed as a listening session with parents, students and teachers from that high school community tomorrow. with us tonight to take a closer look at the numbers, where this country stands on this gun control debate, is our own national political correspondent steve kornacki. hey, steve. welcome. hey, brian. thanks for that. there are few issues when you try to figure out the politics of an issue, there are few that get you as turned inside out as the politics of gun control. because some things can seem very popular, almost universally popular, then you kind of cycle them through the political system, not so much. here is an example. you saw the president mentioning something to do with background checks in a tweet tonight, well, t

back and say more about charlottesville. i also think it struck me that perhaps he wasn t aware that someone had been killed when the car rammed the crowd at the time he made the statement. i ll add one more thing as a former white house staffer, i think it was very difficult for them to put the president out there to try to cram a statement on a serious issue like charlottesville with a pre-existing event to sign something on a policy issue and he was trying to put those two things together. which caused him to ad lib to some degree and i don t think this was a time for ad-libbing and i think this fell short. i hope the president and the white house come back later and condemn the racists who caused today s tragic events. and president trump pivoted his comments on charlottesville to his own accomplishments. his record, low unemployment, bringing businesses back to the country. what do you think was the political strategy there? i don t know there was a strategy.
ban was constitution. constitutional. there was a unanimous decision and the only dissenters. we were talking about it. they were a couple dissenters and they were conservative judges for the only dissent they had was it wasn t a full allowing of the travel ban to go through. ed: it was important to get online. eboni: shows it s not political. it s a rare thing in today s society that s not partisan. kmele: i am skeptical of the efficacy of the travel ban but i agree the president has the authority to do it. this is, as you stated, it s typical and conventional in the sense that the president has the discretion. the reason i m concerned is because ostensibly this is supposed to be about keeping americans safe. i am not certain that it will do that. i am concerned that this is, like the tsa, a bit of security.
