Mittas death leaves vacancy on Canton Township trustee board

Canton Township is suing resident for keeping farm animals on 1-acre lot

CANTON TWP. – Timothy Ward, like a lot of people, has an affinity for milk and cheeseburgers. Unlike much of the general population, Ward keeps cattle and goats on a one-acre lot in a residential subdivision. It s put him at odds with township officials who recently filed a lawsuit against him in Stark County Common Pleas Court. Our last choice is to go that route, township Trustee Christopher Nichols said. The lots are very narrow. I believe it is foul odors that are causing issues. That is a property we have been round and round with for months. He is in violation of our zoning code. We would be seeking a court order to enforce our zoning code. He has been on our zoning list since November of last year.

Canton Township to enhance Faircrest Park

CANTON TWP. A couple picnic shelter pavilions and a concrete slab likely make for a drab impression at Faircrest Park. But with the help of $250,000 in state funding, the township park is on the verge of receiving a facelift. The fresh look will include a new covered pavilion, a stage with a hood over it for performances and a veterans memorial area with a display featuring flags of the military armed forces. Faircrest Park, located in the 1000 block of Faircrest Street SW, lacks indoor plumbing now for restrooms and running water.  We want it to be a nicer place for people to go, township Trustee Christopher Nichols said. The restrooms are really important when we have Community Day. We have events in the park. The park is surprisingly well used, especially in the summer. We just want to take it to the next level.

New regulation remain pending on skill game parlors in Canton Township

CANTON TWP.  Because of the absence of the township law director, township trustees postponed taking a vote on adopting more stringent regulations for skill game parlors. The hearing is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Saturday. Under the proposed changes to the zoning regulations, operators of such parlors would need to get a registration or license from the Ohio Casino Control Commission before opening. Also, the parlors would need to seek a township conditional-use permit and be limited to operating in industrially zoned areas. Our full intention was to take care of this tonight, township Trustee Christopher Nichols said at the Tuesday trustee session. We just had some questions. We just want to make sure things we were doing are clear on the record.
