The 49 new COVID-19 related deaths brings the total to 647 deaths in British Columbia.
Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. s provincial health officer, and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, have issued the following joint statement regarding updates on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) response in British Columbia: Today, we are reporting on three 24-hour periods. From Dec. 11 to 12, we had 698 new cases. From Dec. 12 to 13, we had 689 new cases and in the last 24 hours, we have had a further 759 new cases. This represents 2,146 new cases of COVID-19, including 16 epi-linked cases, for a total of 42,943 cases in British Columbia.
VICTORIA Two COVID-19 outbreaks in health facilities in Port Alberni are now over, Island Health announced Monday. Outbreaks at West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) and Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens, which were declared on Dec. 1 and Nov. 16, respectively, are now free of the virus. According to Island Health, essential visitors are now allowed to return to the hospital and WCGH is once again accepting new admissions and transfers to its medical-surgical B-Wing. Over the course of the outbreak at WCGH, two cases of the virus were confirmed to be linked to the outbreak – one in a patient and one in a staff member.
The hospital is closed to acute admissions, but the emergency department remains open. Lab service outpatient collections have temporarily moved to the Keating Cross Road lab, located at 2140A Keating Cross Rd. In Port Alberni, outbreaks at West Coast General Hospital and Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens long-term care home are considered over. The outbreak at West Coast General Hospital was declared Dec. 1, when a patient and a staff member tested positive for COVID-19. The medical-surgical wing where the outbreak occurred is now open to new admissions and transfers, and essential visitors can return to the hospital, the health authority said. No new cases have been detected at Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens in a month, Island Health said. The outbreak there was declared on Nov. 16, after one staff and two residents tested positive for the virus.
