MediaTek Inc (聯發科), the world’s biggest mobile phone chip supplier, yesterday said it is upbeat about market demand in the long term, driven by accelerating digital transformation worldwide. The company’s comments came in response to shareholders’ concern about chip demand after smartphones and PC sales weakened over the past six months. MediaTek to ship 5G car chips this year

MediaTek Inc (聯發科) yesterday said it would ship the first 5G chips for vehicles to customers in the Asia-Pacific region by the end of the year, as it moves to expand the reach of its 5G chips beyond smartphones. The Hsinchu-based chip designer said it has been developing 5G chips for connected vehicles over the past few years, targeting applications such as telematics and in-vehicle information systems. “We are seeing demand for 5G technology from numerous makers of connected cars, including electric vehicle makers. Taiwanese technology companies, especially those engaged in semiconductors, are facing their greatest ever challenge not only recruiting talent, but also retaining it. Last year was the toughest period in about seven years for semiconductor firms, with job openings reaching a peak of 34,000 in the fourth quarter, a survey by 104 Job Bank found.
