Campaign by 10-year-olds pays off as speed limits reduced

The changes include 500m of Hunter Rd and 500m of Blind Creek Rd reducing from 80kmh to 60kmh. Campbells Rd and Cotterill St had reduced from 100kmh to 40kmh. Speeds on several other roads across the region had also been reduced, including in Blenheim and Picton. The new speed limits were the result of amendments to the existing council bylaw following the Local Road Speed Limits bylaw review. Tua Marina pupil Henry Nott, 10, said it was great the speed limit had changed, because it was less dangerous. “When it is in school hours, people can go quite fast. It can be dangerous,” Henry said.

The New Zealand zoo that was washed away in a weekend

An amateur documentary on the Marlborough Zoological Park shows feeding time with the lions and tigers. How does the song go, “They all laughed at Christopher Columbus when he said the world was round, they all laughed when Edison recorded sound .” Well, they all laughed when Marlborough built a zoo. But no-one was laughing that July weekend in 1983 when the rain wouldn’t let up and the flood waters kept rising. The fences of the zoo were being washed away and the small town of Renwick realised there would soon be nothing between them, the lions, the tigers and a very horny ostrich that mated “anything with two legs”.
