Saint Joe’s is going into the NEC championship game in emphatic fashion.
The Hawks busted open their semifinal tilt with LIU, setting the program record for goals scored in a 19-11 victory Wednesday at Sweeney Field.
The win extends No. 1-seeded Saint Joe’s winning streak to nine games and is the fourth year the Hawks have been to the NEC Tournament championship game. A victory and NCAA berth has been elusive, though and they’ll have to go through Bryant to get it at 1 p.m. Saturday. Offensively, we shared the ball, dodged with purpose, and shot it pretty well, said head coach Taylor Wray following the win. Early on, we had some opportunities I thought we could have finished to separate in the first half, but I m sure they felt the same way. The final five minutes of the first half was the difference in the game. To go from 6-6 to 10-6 during that span gave us a little breathing room. Joe Amplo said that, around last Friday, things just started to feel
different. That’s what happens in Annapolis when the Army-Navy Game approaches.
“I can feel what you guys have been telling me. This one’s going to be different,” Amplo recalls saying to Mark Goers and Kirk Woolfolk, longtime fixtures around the coaching and athletics staff at Navy.
“You drive in the gates on the Yard, every human being that’s inside these gates, they want to beat Army. It doesn’t matter what their role is, they want to beat Army. You can be playing in the national championship game and not everyone in the gates knows who you’re playing and when you’re playing. Everybody knows who Army is, and every single human being wants to beat Army,” said Amplo, who will be coaching in the game for the first time.
In a meeting of two of the top teams in the NEC, Saint Joe’s left no doubt, winning 13-5. Zach Cole went 20-of-22 at the face-off X, surpassing 400 wins on his career, and Evan Campbell (3G, 2A) led Hawk scoring. Saint Joe’s as decisive from start to finish, moving into sole possession of first place in the NEC at 6-0 (6-3 overall). That was a well-earned victory over a very good lacrosse team, said coach Taylor Wray. Every time you play the Bryant Bulldogs, you know you are going to be in for a really physical, highly-contested game. I thought our defense played terrific and executed the game plan well. The face-off game was highly tilted in our favor, which stopped Bryant from making their traditional runs, and we made some plays in transition that allowed us to separate. Evan Campbell was terrific on both ends of the field today, Josh Bosher had his best game of the season, and Zach Cole returns to form at the face-off. There s a lot to be proud of from this game, and a lo
