When white attackers destroyed the prosperous Black neighborhood of Greenwood 100 years ago this week, they bypassed the original sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of North Tulsa. On Sunday, First Baptist's current sanctuary throbbed with a high-decibel service as six congregations gathered to mark the centennial of the massacre and to honor the persistence of the Black church tradition in Greenwood, as shown in the pulsing worship, call-and-response preaching and heavy emphasis on social justice. Greenwood is “holy ground,” said the Rev. John Faison of Nashville, Tennessee, who preached at the service and is assistant to the bishop of social action for the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship.
OBU Trustees approve faculty promotions and dedicate classroom
OBU
The Oklahoma Baptist University Board of Trustees approved faculty promotions and participated in a ribbon-cutting and classroom dedication during their May meeting on the OBU campus in Shawnee.
In his report to the board, OBU President Dr. Heath A. Thomas shared the vision for the university that will guide OBU in “equipping future shapers to live all of life, all for Jesus,” he said. “Just as the little boy in John 6:1-15 gave what he had to our Lord, we give what we have to Jesus, looking to Him to multiply our excellence, our influence, our service and our value.”
South Tulsa Baptist Church
Former Oklahoma Republican senator and congressman Tom Coburn died in March of last year, but his memorial service was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, finally being held on Saturday at South Tulsa Baptist Church. We talked for quite a while after Tom passed about when we were going to do this service, and after a while we kept waiting and waiting and finally decided we really wanted to do this when you could be here and you could be here in person, pastor Eric Costanzo told those in attendance inside the crowded sanctuary and those watching a livestream.

OKLAHOMA CITY -
President Joe Biden released a statement one day after a funeral was held for former U.S. Senator Tom Coburn.
Biden, when he was a Senator, served four years in the senate chamber with Coburn. We (Coburn) continued to work together and get to know each other when I became Vice President, Biden said in the statement. While we may not have always agreed on the issues, I always admired his steadfast commitment to transparency and ethics in government a hallmark throughout his career in public service. He helped remind his fellow members of Congress and the American people that even when we disagree politically, we can come together personally with warmth, respect, and grace.
