The FDA has approved the first-ever oral pill to treat postpartum depression. It's called Zurzuvae, and patients take one pill a day for just two weeks. That’s unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to even begin to work, or the only other postpartum depression-specific drug, which is administered by an IV drip over 60 hours. The drug isn't yet available in Canada, and Dr. Tuong-Vi Nguyen thinks it could still be a while before we see it here.
Zuranolone, which will be marketed under the brand name Zurzuvae, is the first pill developed specifically to treat postpartum depression and maternal mental health experts say it has the potential to completely transform how the condition is treated.
